If you are an insurance professional in the state of New York, there are continuing educational standards that need to be met. Currently, the requirement is every two years, and this applies to your particular area of practice. These requirements are due to changes in insurance laws that undergo expansion and revisions. There are a few aspects of this process that you should understand, especially if this is your first time going through it.

You will need to complete courses and pass a test

Before you can get your license renewal, you will need to complete the appropriate courses for your insurance specialty and pass an examination. This examination will need to be done in the presence of a monitor approved by the New York State Department of Financial Services. You need to make sure you understand how much time it will take to complete your courses and how much study time you will need to make sure you are prepared to pass the test. Failure to meet these deadlines will result in the suspension of your license, and expect late fees when you attempt to become licensed again.

If you have two licenses, you will need more education

If you are a current New York resident holding a license in life and health insurance along with a license in property and casualty, you will need to undergo the continuing education requirements for both areas of insurance. Obviously, this means it will take you twice as long to learn, study and test for this new material, so you need to plan ahead. One course for one area of insurance can usually be completed by studying a couple of hours a day for a couple of weeks. This also includes studying for the examination. So you should double this for two licenses.

These courses are available online

Perhaps the biggest issue with continuing education for any business professional is scheduling. Even if you can make time to learn, you may not be able to schedule it at the same time each day. Maybe you can learn on the weekends, but not every weekend. Some of your free time may be during the weekdays, but you never can make commitments to any particular schedule. Online education solves this issue. You can remain flexible with your course scheduling and fit your learning to your free time, whether it is a weekday or a weekend.

If you are an insurance professional in New York, you are required to renew your license every two years. This means a continuing education course in your insurance specialty to learn the new changes in the laws and recommendations by the state government. These courses are available online, but you will need to pass a test in front of an approved monitor.
